Nature's inventory of halogenation catalysts: oxidative strategies predominate.

Halogenated molecules are widely distributed in the biosphere. A variety of halogenated aromatic and aliphatic compounds are man-made and can be harmful to the environment due to their slow rates of biodegradation.1 Halogenated organic molecules can also arise as natural products in which the carbon-halogen bonds are generated enzymatically. To date, more than 4500 halogenated natural products ...

Incorporation of Halogenated Uracils

A variety of structural analogues of purines and pyrimidines are known to affect the growth of viruses, bacteria and other micro-organisms, plants and animals. Some of these may exert their action through being incorporated into nucleic acids in place of the natural purine or pyrimidine. Such examples are: 8-azaguanine, a structural analogue of guanine, which has been shown to replace guanine i...

The Halogenation of Aromatic Carbinols

In recent years many efforts have been made aiming to define the conditions of the reaction of substitution which lead to inversion of configuration (Walden inversion). The investigations in this direction of Polanyi et al.,’ of Olson,2 of Hughes, Ingold, et aL3 are most outstanding. Polanyi et al. and Olson came to the conclusion that all reactions of substitution by a negative group or ion ar...

Ruthenium-catalyzed intramolecular selective halogenation of O-methylbenzohydroximoyl halides: a new route to halogenated aromatic nitriles.

The intramolecular halogenation of O-methylbenzohydroximoyl halides in the presence of a Ru catalyst and the ligand diphenylacetylene afforded halo substituted aromatic nitriles in a highly regioselective manner. Further, substituted nitriles were converted into substituted tetrazole derivatives in the presence of NaN3 and I2.

Selective halogenation at the pnictogen atom in Lewis-acid/base-stabilised phosphanylboranes and arsanylboranes.

The halogenation of Lewis-acid/base-stabilised phosphanylboranes () and arsanylboranes () with CX4 (X=Cl, Br) leads selectively to the substitution of both protons at the pentel atom and the new compounds [(CO)5W(X2PBH2.NMe3)] (:X=Cl, :X=Br) and [(CO)5W(X2AsBH2.NMe3)] (:X=Cl, :X=Br), respectively, are obtained. The new products were comprehensively characterised by spectroscopic methods and by ...
